Preston’s mother would go on to elaborate that she had been struggling without a vehicle, and William had clearly taken notice. So he began doing some neighborhood yard work to get some money together to help his mom. That’s when he saw a woman selling a 1999 Chevrolet Metro on Facebook, so he “asked her if [he] could trade it for [his] Xbox or earn it. At first she said no and then she thought about it. Then, she said ‘yes’.”
After some negotiation, William was able to buy his mother the car. Concerning her reaction to her son selling his Xbox, she stated, “I lost it. I bawled so bad. I was just like, ’there’s no way. What 13-year-old do you know buys their mom a car? I don’t know any, never heard of any.” Yet on March 23, she received her car.
Needless to say, this act of a 13-year-old boy is selfless, heartwarming, and reminds us of what makes the gaming community so great. While it may be wishful thinking, it’s not impossible that Xbox recognizes this young boy somehow for his act. After all, we’ve seen gaming companies like Nintendo step in to give a fan with terminal cancer the chance to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the past.
For those interested in helping the small family out and acknowledging the good heart of William, a GoFundMe has been created to help this family through its rough patch. At the time of this writing, it has exceeded its $3000 goal in just 2 days.
Actions like this should be celebrated. Hopefully, this boys act of selflessness in selling his Xbox not only sees his family through this particular rough spot in their lives, but also continues through every PC, Xbox, or PS4 gamer who hears his story.
